The Friends of Antonio Calderara was founded in 2003 in the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich during the exhibition on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Antonio Calderara. It is an international community of friends, admirers, artists, museum directors, curators, art historians, collectors and gallerists. The organization is currently still an informal one, and the idea is to establish an International Antonio Calderara Association.
The aim of the Friends of Antonio Calderara is to research, care for and especially to procure the life's work of Antonio Calderara. We think that this is an extremely valuable and important gift to society, both present and future. His work is still far too under-represented in the art world, in museums or in exhibitions; not to mention being inaccessible and unknown to the broader public.
Hence we are happy to have brought more attention to his work through the large exhibitions held in 2003 and 2004 in museums in Munich, Bottrop and Bologna in celebration of Calderara’s 100th birthday, enriched by many loaned works from the Friends of Antonio Calderara. Now, in 2010, we would like to take it a step further.
On this website we show works from the collections of the Friends of Antonio Calderara, mostly from small and larger private collections as well as from museums. Here we would like to collect, research, view – we would especially like, at least through this medium, to display some of his works, and to give a (developing) overview of his entire oeuvre and its fascinating development and evolvement.
This current and ever-increasing collection will combine with the Catalogue raisonné which has been initiated now by the Fondazione Calderara in Milan. The Friends of Antonio Calderara have been aiming towards this goal for a long time and welcome this project warmly and trust in a continuing cooperation with the Fondazione.
We are grateful for and keen to receive any new information concerning Antonio Calderara as well as contributions or contacts.
